North Korea recently appeared to push through with its nuclear program as well as its missile tests, a move that alerted the UN Security Council. However, Pyongyang has blasted the UN agency for having double standards over the military activities of the member countries.
The North Korean state media KCNA reported over the weekend that Pyongyang accused the UN Security Council of having double standards towards its member countries and the isolated nation. The accusation follows reports of the council holding a private meeting for emergency talks related to North Korea’s latest missile test. The United States and other countries have expressed concern regarding the recent test and requested the council to meet.
The meeting took place a day after North Korea tested its newly developed anti-aircraft missile, the latest in the nation’s weapon tests, including hypersonic missiles, ballistic missiles, and a cruise missile that can potentially have nuclear capabilities.
“This is a denial of impartiality, objectivity, and equilibrium, lifelines of the UN activities, and an evident manifestation of double-dealing standard,” said North Korean Foreign Ministry Department of International Organizations director Jo Chol-Su in a statement. Jo also described the emergency UN Security Council meeting as showing “open ignorance of and wanton encroachment” on the isolated nation’s sovereignty as well as a “serious intolerable provocation.”
This comes as nations are looking to keep North Korea from developing any further nuclear weapons and as tensions remain with South Korea. However, developments have also been made regarding relations between both Koreas as North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has ordered to restore communication lines with South Korea, as lines were suspended for some time.
The announcement comes days after Kim stated his intention to restore the lines with their South Korean counterparts. “The relevant organs decided to restore all the North-South communication lines from 9:00 on October 4 true to his intention,” reported KCNA.
“The South Korean authorities should make positive efforts to put the North-South ties on a right track and settle the important tasks which must be prioritized to open up the bright prospect in the future, bearing deep in mind the meaning of the restoration of communication lines,” the media outlet continued.
