What’s on TV This Week: ‘The Wranglers’ and ‘Elsbeth’

For those who still enjoy a cable subscription, here is a selection of cable and network TV shows, movies and specials that broadcast this week, Oct. 14-20 Details and times are subject to change.

Monday

THE WRANGLERS 9 p.m. on the CW. This new documentary is like the reality show “Below Deck,” if it were on a dude ranch instead of a yacht. This show follows a group of cowboys and cowgirls who, by day, work at the Circle Bar Dude Ranch in Montana and then, of course, party by night. Inspired by the drama “Yellowstone,” this series aims to show what real life in ranch country looks like. You know what they say: Save a horse …

Tuesday

I’M NOT A MONSTER 9 p.m. on HBO. In 2018, Lois Riess started a journey that would leave her with the nickname “fugitive grandma.” Riess shot and killed her husband of 26 years in Minnesota, then fled to Florida, committing identity theft, robbery and murder again. This two-part documentary series is her first time speaking out from prison.

Wednesday

SCAMANDA 10 p.m. on ABC. The blogger Amanda Riley had been writing about her fight against Stage 3 blood cancer when an investigative reporter, Nancy Moscatiello, got a tip that Riley wasn’t telling the truth. Eventually Moscatiello uncovered that Riley had lied about her cancer diagnosis and accepted donations to cover medical expenses that didn’t exist. This new documentary series about Riley, who’s currently serving five years in prison, dives deeper in to the case, which was also covered in the podcast “Scamanda.”

Thursday

ELSBETH 10 p.m. on CBS. This spinoff of “The Good Wife,” revolving around the quirky attorney Elsbeth Tascioni, played by Carrie Preston, is back for a second season. This year, she continues to work with the N.Y.P.D. to help solve the crimes happening around the city. The season starts off with a murder in a theater, a ringing cellphone and an opera lover played by Nathan Lane — need I say more?

Friday

HAPPY’S PLACE 8 p.m. on NBC. In this new sitcom, Reba McEntire stars as Bobbie (McEntire), who inherits her father’s tavern after his death. The catch? She has to share ownership with her newly discovered half sister Isabella (Belissa Escobedo).

IT’S FLORIDA, MAN 11 p.m. on HBO. The headlines coming out of Florida in the wake of hurricanes Helene and Milton have been nothing short of devastating. But years before the current wreckage, there was a more lighthearted social media trend of people Googling “Florida man” plus their birthdays for a story ripped from Floridian headlines. This new series plays on that trend, with fictionalized versions enacted by guests stars including Anna Faris, Jake Johnson and Randall Park. And because it is Florida, there are of course mermaids, alligators and general mayhem.

Saturday

MAXXXINE (2024) 8 p.m. on HBO. This third installment of Ti West’s “X” series came out in theaters in July, with Mia Goth again at the center. All three movies “are anchored by Goth’s work, which remains deeply sincere even as it grows delightfully unhinged,” Kellina Moore wrote in a profile of Goth for The New York Times. Of the actual film, the Times critic Jeannette Catsoulis wrote: “This hyperconfident feature is also funny, occasionally wistful and deeply empathetic toward its damaged, driven heroine.”

Sunday

MOONFLOWER MURDERS 9 p.m. on PBS (check local listings). This series isn’t just based on Anthony Horowitz’s novel of the same name; instead the plot features it. The editor Susan Ryeland (Lesley Manville) is in charge of solving a cold case, which has clues hidden in Horowitz’s book. The season is wrapping up this week.

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN: BACKSTAGE AND BACKSTREETS 10 p.m. on ABC. Bruce Springsteen’s new tour documentary “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band” is premiering on Disney+ and Hulu this month, but ahead of that, he sat down with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos to talk about touring and journey with his band E Street. Springsteen kicked off his current tour in February 2023 before having to reschedule most dates to 2024 due to his treatment for peptic ulcer disease.
