No matter where they live, the beginning of a new school year is an opportunity for kids to show the world who they are and what they think looks cool right now. But how much does where you live play into personal style? To see if we could spot any patterns in what kids are wearing around the country, The New York Times for Kids visited middle schools in five different cities — Los Angeles, San Antonio, Denver, Minneapolis and New York City — on the very first day of class. Some trends were obvious: cargo pants, stacked bracelets, brightly colored hair, ’90s everything. But the biggest trend we found? Wearing whatever you like. Here, 47 kids tell us what that means to them, and what they’re into now.
